MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa yesterday obtained a provisional High Court order halting the disbursement of $7.5 million under the Political Parties Finance Act to the Thokozani Khupe -led MDC-T as assets became the latest battleground in the fractured opposition. Government was due to release the money given to political parties with more than five seats in Parliament to the MDC Alliance at a time the opposition party had been thrown into disarray by a Supreme Court ruling declaring Chamisa an illegitimate leader. The ruling made last month, also declared Khupe the acting president of the opposition party until an extra congress to be held in three months. This is despite Chamisa and Khupe participating in the last general elections under different political groupings. Armed

MDC-A We Stopped Attempted Takeover Of HQ By Mwonzora-Khupe

The opposition MDC Alliance on Thursday said it foiled an attempted take-over of its Harare headquarters hours after it announced a boycott of parliamentary proceedings to protest against the dismissal of four of its legislators at the behest of a faction opposed to the party leadership. On March 31, the country’s Supreme Court declared that Nelson Chamisa’s leadership of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance was illegitimate and ordered the party to hold an election to elect new leadership within three months. A majority of MDC-A leaders have rallied behind Chamisa, arguing that the leadership issue was settled when the party held a congress in 2019 to choose a new executive. But a faction opposed to Chamisa has been emboldened by the court ruling and this

Mwonzora Explains Why He Recalled MDC Alliance MPs

Douglas Mwonzora speaks on why he recalled the MDC Alliance MPs. On Tuesday, the Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Mudenda made a shock announcement that MPs Chalton Hwende, Prosper Mutseyami, Thabitha Khumalo, and Lilian Timveous were no longer sitting legislators as the party had recalled them following a request from Mwonzora. Reinstated MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora has said he was left with no option but to write to Parliament ordering the recall of four top party MPs as they were leading other legislators into disregarding a Supreme Court ruling that nullified Nelson Chamisa presidency. However, Mwonzora in an interview with NewZimbabwe as adamant the recall was justified and also a formality as the affected MPs had already expelled themselves from the part

Dozens Arrested Over Mask Violations In Zimbabwe

Police arrested 115 people for not wearing masks while thousands stood for hours in bus queues on a chaotic day Monday, as Zimbabwe began easing lockdown restrictions which had shut down most of the country since March 30. A 35-day lockdown due to expire on May 3 was extended for a further 14 days by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, but big businesses were allowed to re-open although informal markets – where over 80 percent of Zimbabweans earn their living – remain closed. Mnangagwa also said only buses would be allowed to transport workers, freezing out taxis which many workers avoiding the congestion in buses prefer. There was also an outcry from businesses which have been ordered to get their employees tested for coronavirus before they can resume operations. After get
