At least 29 Zimbabweans living in Britain have died of Covid-19, mostly nurses and other medical staff, according to the Zimbabwean Embassy in London. The pandemic has so far killed at least 18 738 in Britain, while in Zimbabwe four have died. Britain is one of the countries hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. In a statement, the Embassy said while it had no official figures it “has been able to gather information from the Diaspora community and religious leaders, cluster leaders, affected individuals and the media, on Zimbabweans who have passed on due to Covid-19”. Sources in the UK said most of the deceased were nurses and other frontline health workers. Zimbabweans with nursing and medical qualifications have found it relatively easy to legally work in Brita
Panic spread among 25 Zimbabweans in mandatory quarantine at Belvedere Teachers’ College after the health ministry announced on Wednesday night that two members of the group had tested positive for the coronavirus – before the results were communicated to the detainees. By 9AM on Thursday, health officials had still not given the group their results from samples collected on Monday shortly after their arrival onboard a special Ethiopian Airlines flight. “We are just reading on Twitter and online that our results are out and two of us have tested positive. As I speak right now, we still have not been told what our individual results are. The government is causing unnecessary anxiety on so simple a matter like this,” a member of the group told Zim
ANOTHER Zimbabwean born but United Kingdom-based nurse has died from coronavirus. Sources in the UK identified the deceased as Irene Mandaza. "We lost another Zimbabwean nurse Irene Mandaza today. She was also from Mufakose," a source said. A number of medical professionals from Zimbabwe have sadly succumbed to the coronavirus in the United Kingdom. Her unfortunate death is another sad statistic to the growing number of Zimbabwean health professionals dying of the disease in the line of duty in the UK. The NHS employs a lot of Zimbabwean health professionals who escaped the country's economic hardship after the turn of the century and have been fending for their loved ones back home. However, Covid-19 bugged UK has exposed them to the hazards of catching the d
Sixty-five Zimbabweans returning from the United Kingdom yesterday refused compulsory quarantine at Belvedere Technical Teacher’s College citing “poor conditions”, and preferred to be checked into a hotel instead but they were kept there overnight while there is possible transfer to the University of Zimbabwe today. According to Government officials dealing with the returnees, they knew that Zimbabwe wanted compulsory quarantine for everyone coming from Covid-19 hotspots, but they were expecting “something better”. Some offered to meet own accommodation expenses at preferred places. In an interview last night, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Secretary Mr Simon Masanga said alternative accommodation could only be arranged today. This was

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa says President Emmerson Mnangagwa has acted recklessly and is ‘totally’ inconsiderate of the people after he announced a two-week extension to the lockdown. President Mnangagwa on Sunday extended a lockdown to contain the spread of the new coronavirus by two weeks, saying the country had not yet met conditions set down by the World Health Organization to lift the measures. “It has been a very hard decision that my government has had to take reluctantly,” President Mnangagwa said in a live television broadcast. INFIGHTING in the opposition MDC party is escalating as the Thokozani Khupe-led faction — buoyed by a recent Supreme Court ruling ordering the party to revert to 2014 MDC-T structures — prepares to re-organise the party after the government-imposed lockdown, from grassroots level up, in preparation for an extraordinary congress. ANDREW KUNAMBURA/NYASHA CHINGONO This is despite stiff resistance from the camp led by the firebrand Nelson Chamisa, which has declared the court ruling a nullity. A fortnight ago, the Supreme Court ruled that the MDC should revert to its 2014 structures, adding that C
Hundreds of Zimbabweans living in Botswana are applying for a trip home, saying the COVID-19 crisis has left them on the edge of starvation. The immigrants usually survive by doing odd jobs, but with Botswana in a lockdown due the coronavirus, they cannot find work to support themselves. Additionally, the immigrants were initially excluded from the Botswana government's food parcels. "We are in a bad state," said Josephine Mutsaka, 54, one of many Zimbabwean illegal immigrants in Gaborone. "We have no food at the moment, and the only option is to go back home. When we are in Botswana, we survive through 'piece jobs' but that has stopped because of the lockdown. We can't blame the Botswana government for giving priority to its citizens." Botswana
