A Self-styled traditional healer has been arrested in Mutare after he was allegedly found carrying two live snakes, which he reportedly used in rituals aimed at helping clients, particularly miners, acquire wealth and prosperity.

The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Gift Kanodaweta, also known as James Malunga and popularly referred to as “Sekuru Kamutungunde,” was arrested in Chikanga suburb late last month. According to Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, Kanodaweta was apprehended after a member of the Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers Association reported that he was practising without registration. Police investigations revealed that the suspect was allegedly in possession of a puff adder and a cobra without the required permit from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.

Authorities say Kanodaweta told investigators that he had travelled to Mozambique in 2024 for spiritual fortification, where he was given two eggs by another traditional healer. He claimed the eggs later hatched into the snakes found in his possession. Kanodaweta further stated that he specialised in conducting rituals for individuals in the mining sector seeking wealth generation from their mining claims. The snakes have since been handed over to ZimParks, while the suspect has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department’s Mineral Flora and Fauna Unit. Police have confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
