Javits Frimpong, 15, Fatally Shot on Way to School; Father Raises Bullying Concerns

Javits Frimpong, 15, Fatally Shot on Way to School; Father Raises Bullying Concerns

BRONX, NEW YORK
A family and community are mourning 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, who was fatally shot while heading to school in the Claremont section of the Bronx on Thursday morning, 29 October 2026.

Police responded shortly after 9 a.m. near East 171st Street and found Javits with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Officers took him to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he later died.

A Father’s Bullying Concerns

Javits’s father, Thomas Frimpong, said his son had told school officials that he was being bullied.

He also said the school principal had recently informed him that two students were suspended after a school incident.

Thomas believes the shooting may be connected to his son’s bullying concerns.

Investigators have not confirmed a connection between the school reports and the shooting, and no motive had been established as of 30 October.

Police were seeking multiple people in connection with the case; no arrests had been reported.

Other Cases, Different Circumstances

The deaths of other young people from migrant and refugee families have also raised concern. Damilola Taylor, a 10-year-old who had moved from Nigeria to Britain, was killed in south London in 2000.

Two teenage brothers were later convicted of manslaughter.

During the trial, a witness claimed Damilola had been taunted about his African accent.

That reported testimony should be understood in its court context; Damilola was attacked on an estate, not at school, and the case does not establish a link to Javits’s shooting.

In Glasgow, 15-year-old Eritrean refugee Amen Teklay died after a street attack in 2025.

Two teenagers charged with his murder were found not guilty in July 2026. Reports described an incident on the street, not a school bullying case.

A Call for Schools and Communities to Act

These cases are different, and they should not be treated as proof of a motive in Javits’s death.

But they underline the need for schools and local communities to take reports of bullying seriously, provide trusted ways for children to seek help, and respond promptly when harassment targets a child’s accent, culture or background.

As a journalist,

I extend my sincere condolences to Javits’s father, mother, family in Ghana, and everyone affected by this tragedy and other heartbreaking losses like it.

I urge African diaspora communities, schools and local services to work together to protect young people.

Families should be heard when they raise concerns, and children should feel safe reporting bullying without fear of being ignored.

Every young person deserves to go to school and return home safely.
