Why the Chivayo family confirmed burial without heads — what we know so far
Many have been asking a painful question: Why were Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy's heads not recovered after the helicopter crash?
Family spokesman Herbert Chivayo addressed this directly on Sunday, and we share this with deep respect for the family.
According to the family:
1. The crash was followed by an intense fire. The helicopter went down on Sept 30 at Kudenga Farm in Marondera in misty conditions. On impact, jet fuel spilled and the wreckage caught fire and burned until it died on its own.
2. The remains were beyond recognition. The five people on board suffered severe burns. Because of this, there will be no body viewing.
3. What was first thought to be head remains, was not. Forensic officials examined all recovered remains. The family clarified:
“I have seen on social media people saying that the heads were found, but that's not true. No head was found.”
The couple will be laid to rest side by side on Thursday, October 8 at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare.
