Zimbabwe Govenrment Pleads With Doctors To Stop Strike

GOVERNMENT yesterday begged senior doctors to reconsider their threat to go on strike from today as COVID-19 wreaks havoc in the health sector, with 253 healthcare workers (HCWs) falling victim to the novel coronavirus. Nurses have been on strike since June 17, and a strike by senior doctors would paralyse public hospitals. In a four-page letter to Senior Hospital Doctors Association president Shingai Nyaguse yesterday, acting Health secretary Gibson Mhlanga said the issue of personal protective equipment (PPE) which red zone healthcare workers are demanding was being addressed. “The procurement and distribution of PPE is a continuous process and not an event as the consumption rate is very high,” part of the letter by Mhlanga read. Zim Parliament Shut Down After 2 MPs Test Positive For COVID-19

Speaker of Parliament Advocate Jacob Mudenda has announced that two Members of Parliament have tested positive for the deadly Coronavirus. Mudenda said the two MPs were part of a team that had gone for field visits across the country. Also confirmed positive was one of the drivers and a reporter who was part of the team. Meanwhile parliament has announced that Tuesday's House sitting will be composed of a limited number for the sole purpose of adjourning the House to allow for contact tracing and disinfecting the House. Other members who were part of the team are reportedly now in self-quarantine. Harare Mayor Gomba Denied Bail Next Hearing August The 7th

Harare Mayor Councillor Herbert Gomba has been denied bail by Harare Magistrate, Bianca Makwande following his arrest on Tuesday on charges of abuse of office. In denying bail to Gomba, Makwande said he is likely to interfere with witnesses and that there is a likelihood of him fleeing outside the country since he faces a harsh sentence if convicted. Gomba’s lawyer Professor Lovemore Madhuku had told the court that there was no evidence to deny bail to his client while he also submitted that Glen Norah councillor be allowed to pay RTGS$5000 and surrender his passport as part of the bail conditions. Madhuku also condemned the conduct of the police whom he accused of delaying to have Gomba appear in court. He will be back in court on the 7th of August.
