Zimbabwe reported three new coronavirus cases on Saturday, two of them local transmissions. The ministry of health said all three positive tests were registered at the laboratory in Harare, taking the national total to 31 cases. “Two of the three cases confirmed today were local transmissions. All three cases are stable and not in hospital. More details on those cases to follow,” the ministry said in a statement. Most of the 31 cases have been recorded from individuals with a recent travel history to high risk countries, but authorities have always feared local transmissions which influenced a government decision in late March to impose a national lockdown and restrict the movement of people inside the country. Only two people have recovered from the respiratory ill
Zimbabwe’s government agreed with bakers, millers and other businesses on Wednesday to cut the prices of basic goods, including bread and sugar, to levels before the country entered a coronavirus lockdown last month amid soaring inflation. Annual inflation in the southern African nation has hit 676.39%, one of the highest rates in the world, as a currency that was re-introduced last year weakens amid acute shortages of foreign currency, food and medicines. Vice President Kembo Mohadi said the government had agreed with bakers, grain millers and edible oil and sugar producers, among others, that price increases seen in the last month were speculative and unjustified. “The multi-sectoral stakeholders committed to a price moratorium to operate based on the prices which we

Sources in the UK said most of the deceased were nurses and other frontline health workers. Zimbabweans with nursing and medical qualifications have found it relatively easy to legally work in Brita
Panic spread among 25 Zimbabweans in mandatory quarantine at Belvedere Teachers’ College after the health ministry announced on Wednesday night that two members of the group had tested positive for the coronavirus – before the results were communicated to the detainees. By 9AM on Thursday, health officials had still not given the group their results from samples collected on Monday shortly after their arrival onboard a special Ethiopian Airlines flight. “We are just reading on Twitter and online that our results are out and two of us have tested positive. As I speak right now, we still have not been told what our individual results are. The government is causing unnecessary anxiety on so simple a matter like this,” a member of the group told Zim

She was also from Mufakose," a source said. A number of medical professionals from Zimbabwe have sadly succumbed to the coronavirus in the United Kingdom. Her unfortunate death is another sad statistic to the growing number of Zimbabwean health professionals dying of the disease in the line of duty in the UK. The NHS employs a lot of Zimbabwean health professionals who escaped the country's economic hardship after the turn of the century and have been fending for their loved ones back home. However, Covid-19 bugged UK has exposed them to the hazards of catching the d
Sixty-five Zimbabweans returning from the United Kingdom yesterday refused compulsory quarantine at Belvedere Technical Teacher’s College citing “poor conditions”, and preferred to be checked into a hotel instead but they were kept there overnight while there is possible transfer to the University of Zimbabwe today. According to Government officials dealing with the returnees, they knew that Zimbabwe wanted compulsory quarantine for everyone coming from Covid-19 hotspots, but they were expecting “something better”. Some offered to meet own accommodation expenses at preferred places. In an interview last night, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Secretary Mr Simon Masanga said alternative accommodation could only be arranged today. This was

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa says President Emmerson Mnangagwa has acted recklessly and is ‘totally’ inconsiderate of the people after he announced a two-week extension to the lockdown. President Mnangagwa on Sunday extended a lockdown to contain the spread of the new coronavirus by two weeks, saying the country had not yet met conditions set down by the World Health Organization to lift the measures. “It has been a very hard decision that my government has had to take reluctantly,” President Mnangagwa said in a live television broadcast.
